The greatest advantage is that you can Fast/Detox in the comfort of your own home, & there is no need for you to travel anywhere. You will learn how to eat & live more healthily in your own home & it will be much easier to integrate these new healthier living skills into your normal life. We can look at what foods you are already using at home & then look at which other foods you could start using & how to do so. If you have a good health shop nearby, we could even visit it, so that you can stock up with healthier foods & condiments for your new lifestyle.
You will also be receiving One to One support during the whole process, in a totally private & confidential environment. The retreat can be tailored specifically to your own personal circumstances & requirements.
It can be very hard to keep up the motivation to go through a Detox on your own. Whereas with support, it is so much easier.
A professional guide knows the difference between a Healing Crisis (strong reactions experienced in the Detox, which are part of the process taking you to much better health) & a Dis-ease Crisis (strong reactions experienced in the Detox, which are indicative of your need to stop the Detox or to change how you are doing the cleanse immediately). This is really important to know, because it is the difference between giving up when the Detox is just about to have a profound healing effect on you or carrying on when you may be damaging yourself!
On a retreat you get to step out of your normal routines & have time for yourself. You will be doing many things that are nurturing & supportive of your own well being & healing, such as learning yoga, chi gung & meditation; learning how to improve your diet; receiving various complementary therapies; & having time to slow down & de-stress.
For the Juice Fasts & Herbal Detoxes, a typical day begins at 7a.m. with a wake up call, followed by a warm lemon water drink. At 7.30, you will learn & practice yogic breathing exercises, which will help your body to detoxify & also will calm & balance your mind. This is followed by a short session of learning how to practice meditation & then an hour of yoga or chi gung.
After your morning exercise, you will have your first fruit or vegetable juice of the day. You will get a fresh juice, about every 3 hours throughout the day, until the evening time, when you will be given a hot, clear, vegetable broth. This broth is warming & is also an important part of the cleansing process, as it has a high potassium content.
During the day you will be given some form of appropriate complementary therapy & will be encouraged to do other activities that encourage better detoxification, like skin brushing & hydrotherapy baths.
The end of the day typically finishes with a meditation session.

The enzymes, vitamins, minerals & phyto nutrients found in fresh juices are extremely useful in helping your body to eliminate toxins safely. The juices are made with large quantities of fresh & organic (as much as are available), fruits & vegetables. Juicing requires vast quantities of fruits & vegetables, in fact, whilst you are with on your detox, you will probably consume a much higher quantity of nutrients than you would do when eating normally.
If you have another venue that you are able to provide & would rather do your Detox in, then this is also possible.

Sometimes it is possible for Jem to organise a venue that the retreat can be held in, but you would have to pay for the extra cost of this.
I will teach you Pranayama (yogic breathing exercises) & meditation too, but the retreats are really a time for slowing down & stepping out of doing mode. They are set up to encourage you to drop into “being” & to come back to yourself. Therefore the retreats are quite spacious. You are encouraged to read, walk, ask health or nutritional questions, nap, chat, etc.
The 7 day retreats are a bit more busy, due to having to do colonics/enemas & taking supplements & fibre drinks as part of the program.
Most people are surprised how little they feel hungry. You will consume far more vitamins, minerals & nutrients whilst drinking the juices there than you would when eating normally. Some people do feel hungry sometimes & this is often an emotional response, which is why it is really helpful to do this with good support.
On the 7 day retreats, participants drink soft fibre drinks which give the sensation of being physically full.
Most people do lose weight. On average, people seem to lose between 2-10kg (4.4-22 lbs) in a week.
If people are very slight or thin to start with, they tend to lose less, then rebalance to their optimal weight, shortly afterwards, once their system is working properly.
